Arno Bourgonje

I am a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Division of Gastroenterology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City (NY, United States), advised by prof. Saurabh Mehandru and prof. Jean-Frédéric Colombel. My research is focused on the identification, application, and validation of biomarker signatures in patients affected by inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). I am particularly interested in the use of high-throughput immunological techniques and complex data science to interrogate immune system alterations in IBD and identify novel biomarkers for early diagnosis, disease complications and long-term disease prognosis of patients with IBD.

I completed an MD/PhD trajectory (MD: 2020, summa cum laude; PhD: 2023, cum laude) at the University of Groningen and University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands. My PhD focused on the identification of novel biomarker signatures for patients with IBD through exploration of multiple biological systems (e.g., the immune system and gut microbiome) and -mechanisms (e.g., oxidative stress and inflammation). My current position is supported by a NWO Rubicon fellowship.
